Is CBD Oil a Natural Antimicrobial Treatment for Fresh Produce?

A recent study conducted by researchers in the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology at the University of South Florida’s Food Quality Laboratory found that CBD oil has the potential to be used as a natural antimicrobial treatment for fresh produce.

The study was completed by harvesting strawberries and evaluating visual quality and microbial load before applying CBD oil and then storing them at 1°C for 8 days and then 10°C for 8 days, checking for that visual quality and microbial load throughout the process. When compared to the strawberries that were not treated, researchers found that the CBD oil inhibited yeast and mold growth and had “better overall quality compared to non-treated fruit.” Furthermore, the fruit even looked better than the control group.

There have been a lot of exciting studies on CBD of late and as more and more benefits are discovered, it certainly seems that the hemp plant is the gift that keeps on giving.
